Punta Laguna Tour: The reserve where the nature experience begins
Punta Laguna monkey reserve better known as “Otoch ma’ax yetel kooh” is located along the
borders of the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan.
The preserve is operated by the indigenous maya people living in the community which stands at the entrance of the sanctuary.
Since 1950, the inhabitants of the village have protected their land which was officially declared by the Mexican government as one of the natural protected areas in Mexico in 2002.
The reserve has an area of 5,367 hectares which is home of plenty of wildlife such as, spider
monkeys, howler monkeys, jaguars, pumas, ocelots, white-tailed deers, birds, and much more
species.


Where Adventure and Relaxation Meet
The nature reserve Otoch Ma’ax yetel is located just north of the Cobá Archaeological Site on Route 109 in the Yucatán State of Quintana Roo. The reserve offers tours to observe the endangered spider monkey population and has several ruins, a cenote, and trails to explore the lush jungle abounding in hundreds of bird species.

Guided Monkey Walk
Begin your visit through the jungle looking for spider monkeys and howler monkeys in their natural habitat while you also learn about the flora of the region. Conclude the experience around a beautiful lake where you will have some free time to take pictures, enjoy the view or swim to cool off after a wonderful hike.

Mayan Village Birdwatching
Accompanied by one of our local guides you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a great diversity of birds in the reserve which is home of over 220 species. An amazing time birding in the village that continues into the jungle until we reach a beautiful lake.
On this tour we can spot between 30-60 species depending on the season and the birds’ activity during the day.

Guided Full Tour
The experience begins by meeting a Xaman from the village to take part of a traditional cleansing ceremony respecting the beliefs of the community. After that, you will look for the monkeys completely free in the jungle while you also go zip lining and canoeing around the beautiful lake. End up with a swim into the underworld where your guide will lower you down in the crystal waters of a magnificent cenote.
When finishing the tour with your guide you will be given the choice to stay in the lake to continue swimming or just enjoying the peacefulness of nature.

Night Jungle Tour
The jungle also comes alive at night. Punta Laguna Reserve is magical offering something special no matter the time of the year or the day.
Come explore the different paths on a nocturnal and easy walk in the protected area known as “Otoch ma’ax yetel kooh”. Some of the species we look for are spiders, snakes, owls, frogs, toads and why not crocodiles in the lake (The visits will always vary depending on the moon cycle and weather conditions).
